Cymru Against Human Trafficking

What Is Human Trafficking?

Human Trafficking is being bought or sold against your will. To be deceived or taken against your will, bought, sold and transported into slavery.  It can be for sexual exploitation, forced begging, sacrificial worship or removal of human organs, as child brides or into sweat shops, circuses, farm labour and domestic servitude.

Victims suffer repeated physical abuse, fear, torture and threats to their family. These tactics are used by traffickers to break a persons spirit and enable the trafficker to continue to exert power over those they have trafficked.

2-4 million men, women and children are trafficked across borders and within their own country every year. Every minute, more than one person is trafficked across borders. This is equivalent to ten full jumbo jets of people.

The UN reports that People Trafficking is the fastest growing means by which people are enslaved - the fastest growing international crime - and one of the largest sources of income for organised crime.

Trafficking in Newport

This is something that is very new to us in Newport, but the Police are seeing an increase within the brothels in the area. There are approximately 60 brothels/sexual services within the Newport area.

Although at this time we don’t have exact figures for Newport, it is a rapidly growing trade in this city and one we cannot stand by and see happen.

Trafficking in the UK

Hundreds of men, women and children are trafficked each year to the UK. Research carried out for the Home Office estimates that the number of women trafficked into the UK is between 4,000-10,000 women per year.

The UK is primarily a destination country for trafficking. Some people are brought directly here and their exploitation commences only after arrival. Others are brought to the UK in stages and exploited in transit countries before ultimately arriving in the UK. The majority of trafficked victims in the UK are from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa & South America.
